From auto layout to automatic captions: 6 features coming to YouTube Shorts

YouTube has announced a slew of new features coming to Shorts. The Google-owned streaming platform said in its latest Release Notes episode that the short video content service is bringing tools aimed at creating and sharing on Shorts fun and accessible.

YouTube’s Chief Product Officer Johanna Voolich spoke about the platform’s vision for Shorts, highlighting its potential for established YouTubers and newcomers alike. Here’s a sneak peek at the exciting new tools coming soon:

Auto layouting to transform longer videos to Shorts
Soon, users will be able to use Auto layout on Android, which automatically tracks the main subject in the video while turning it into a Short. This means when long form videos are being converted into Shorts, the Auto layout tool will automatically and dynamically pan, zoom and crop it.

Interactive “Add Yours” sticker on YouTube Shorts
Just like Instagram, users will soon be able to include “Add Yours” stickers on Shorts, allowing others who watch the video clip to share their own related content. “We’re rolling this out gradually over the next few weeks,” it said.

Add new Minecraft effects to YouTube Shorts
To help celebrate Minecraft’s 15th anniversary, YouTube is bringing two new effects in Shorts. Minecraft Spring, and Minecraft Rush – a new mini game users can play right in the Shorts player.

“Tap to clear all the blocks as fast as you can, record your attempt, and compete with your friends to see who comes out on top,” the company added.

Automatic captions displayed on a YouTube Shorts video
Soon, Shorts creators can add auto-generated captions directly on the content to make Shorts more fun, engaging, accessible and helpful for people.

YouTube Shorts brings Remix a Remix tool
Currently, users can use an original Short and remix it with their own content to make new content. The company recently launched the option to remix a remix.

Text to speech YouTube Shorts narration coming soon
With Text to Speech, content creators will be able to explain videos with text on Short narrated or spoken out loud. After recording a Short, creators can add text and tap the “Add voice” icon in the top left where they can choose from four voice options.
