EVERSON, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – An Everson man was arrested after allegedly hacking someone’s Facebook account to sell stolen tools.
Court documents state that a farmer in Lynden reported several of his tools were stolen from his property in March. A month later, he found listings for some of the tools posted to Facebook Marketplace by a user named “Matthew”.
Investigators later learned that “Matthew” has been in prison since 2021.
In late April, deputies responded to a burglary at an Everson business where tools were stolen from a locked room. The tools showed up on Facebook Marketplace later that day from “Matthew’s” account.
A detective with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department made arrangements to purchase one of the tools from the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Reuben Perez. Perez claimed that he was friends with Matthew and had gotten into his Facebook account by accident.
When contacted in prison, Matthew denied knowing who Perez was and that he had been locked out of his Facebook account.
Perez was taken into custody on July 16 but was released on bail on Friday, July 19.
