GM hires YouTube exec for key editorial, creative role

General Motors has hired Jessica Wang as executive director of content strategy.

Wang started in the role last month. In a LinkedIn post, Wang said she took the job to “tell the transformation story of a foundational American company, a company that could have played it safe but instead decided to chart an all-electric and autonomous future.”

GM is planning to evolve into strictly an EV company, completely phasing out gas and diesel vehicles by 2035, despite some setbacks in its strategy.

Wang said GM is building out its storytelling engine, and her team is hiring for two roles: editorial producer and writer and video content creator.

Wang was not available for additional comment.

Before joining GM, Wang was YouTube’s head of editorial and creative hub since 2019, leading a team in developing brand strategy to grow reach across demographics and topics. She also worked to drive engagement for the YouTube blog, Creator Liaison, social and video and created an engagement plan for the C-suite, including speech content, industry events, interviews, and op-eds and video, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“Anybody who knows me knows how much I love all things YouTube. The culture, the creators, the community — it’s truly special,” Wang wrote on LinkedIn. “It would have to be an extraordinary opportunity for me to leave.”

Wang is the latest hire that GM’s comms team has brought on from a Silicon Valley blue chip. Google’s Lin-Hua Wu joined the automaker last August in its top communications role. She took over GM’s comms from Craig Buchholz and joined just one year after Buchholz, now U.S. CEO of Burson, reorganized the global comms leadership team to tackle high-priority work, provide more career-growth opportunities and increase diversity in senior leadership.

This year, Wu was named to PRWeek’s Power List.

Former Facebook head of state policy communications Daniel Roberts also joined GM for a two-year spell before returning to Meta early this year.

In Q1, GM’s revenue was up 7.6% from roughly $40 billion a year earlier. Its net income during the quarter increased about 26% to $2.95 billion. The Detroit-based auto giant is expected to report Q2 earnings on July 23.
