Hackers demand $16K and Target purchases

DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — The Dare County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a Facebook scam.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office received a call from person stating that someone had hacked his Facebook account and posted a meme of a child “mooning” other children in a classroom.

This led Facebook to flag his account for child pornography. The man says he Googled the number for Facebook and found 816-946-2404. After calling the number, he gave the person he was talking to his drivers license number and home address.

The man said he was then asked to send them $16000, and he agreed to do so. After that, he was asked to make multiple purchases at Target, but he refused and hung up the phone.

He says that his bank was able to block multiple charges later that day.
