Melbourne woman reunites with long-lost brother through Facebook after 70 years

Anna Konstantaki, from Melbourne and a Neos Kosmos reader has shared the story of her friend Emilia Klonari, who managed to find her long-lost brother Nikos Papadakis through Facebook.

Konstantaki is the one that helped Klonari utilise the power of social media.

“It all began with a post on Facebook,” Konstantaki tells Neos Kosmos.

“We are looking for Nikos Papadakis, approximately 70 years old, believed to be living in Thessaloniki or Serres. Seventy years ago, Dimitrios Papadakis, Nikos’ father, left Greece for Australia to work and bring his family over later. Dimitrios never returned to Greece, remarried in Australia, and had two daughters.

Nikos’ father has now passed away, and his sister (my friend) is looking for her brother. We have no other information, only his name. We have heard he might have been active in politics, but we are not certain. Anyone who can help or knows Nikos, please send me a message so the siblings can meet for the first time,” the post read.

Different media platforms in Greece reshared the post, including local websites in Kastoria, where Nikos Papadakis is from.

Finally, through contacts in Germany, her friend’s brother was found.

“My friends told me that this story is amazing and should be shared with Neos Kosmos to inspire others to believe in miracles,” Konstantaki said.

“A few days ago, I posted on Facebook seeking information about a man whose only known details were his name, surname, and approximate age (mid-70s). His sister, who had never met him, wanted to find him.”

She shared it on Facebook, and within two days, received messages and calls from Germany and Germany.

“We found him! My friend was very afraid to call him, so we ended up having a three-way conversation. He cried, she cried, I cried – it was like a scene from a Martha Vourtsi movie!” Konstantaki said.

Coincidentally, Monday was also Papadakis’ 75th birthday. The long-lost siblings FaceTimed or the first time and tears flowed.

“Now, we are planning to go to Greece in September for the siblings to reunite. I will go with my friend as well,” Konstantaki said, promising a full report for Neos Kosmos readers.

“This story gives hope to all those looking for their siblings and shows that using Facebook and other social media can help reconnect families. Blood is thicker than water! God is great.”
