New YouTube policy lets you take down deepfakes impersonating you

While AI-generated content continues to grow, so are its misuses. In a recent, quiet policy update, YouTube introduced a new takedown option designed specifically for AI-generated content that impersonates someone.

This update allows you to request the removal of videos that use AI to mimic your face or voice. However, unlike traditional takedown requests for misleading content, YouTube categorizes this under privacy violations.

According to YouTube’s updated help documentation, users can submit takedown requests, but success hinges on several factors. For example, YouTube will consider if the video clearly discloses its use of AI or synthetic media, and if it can be identified as parody, satire, or newsworthy content.

The potential impact on public figures is also a concern. YouTube will evaluate if the AI content depicts the person engaging in inappropriate behavior, especially if it could sway public opinion, like endorsing a political candidate.

Interestingly, YouTube won’t immediately remove flagged videos. The content creator will have 48 hours to respond to the complaint before YouTube initiates a review process.

This update comes alongside other YouTube efforts to combat misleading content. In March, they introduced a tool for creators to disclose the use of AI-generated media. Additionally, they’re testing a feature allowing viewers to collaboratively add context to videos, potentially flagging parodies or misleading content.

In general, YouTube isn’t against AI use, considering that it experimented with it. Still, they emphasize that simply labeling content as AI-generated won’t guarantee it stays online. All videos must still comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
