The Ohio Housing Finance Agency is warning Ohioans about a scam page on Facebook claiming to have opened a wait list for sought-after Section 8 vouchers and public housing assistance.
The scammers are attempting to get people to give them their personal information, the OHFA says.
The Facebook post calling itself the Ohio Housing Development Authority, an agency that does not exist, states that they will be opening their waitlist and accepting applications for the Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher Program and instructs people to apply at the website listed on the flyer. The flyer also claims that the waitlist opened on June 7 and will close on June 12. The Facebook page uses the OHFA logo on its profile.
Penny Martin, director of public affairs for the OHFA, told the Dispatch that when they heard about the fake post from customers, they immediately addressed it on their Facebook and their other social media platforms.
“The OHFA does not issue housing vouchers,” Martin said. She also advised Ohioans that if they want to be issued vouchers, they need to contact their local housing authority. Anyone who may have fallen for the scam and provided personal information about themselves should contact the Ohio Attorney General’s office. OHFA has notified Facebook about the fake account, Martin said.
Both the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and a spokesman for the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority said they were unaware of the scam when The Dispatch contacted them Monday afternoon.
