ROCHESTER — A 76-year-old Rochester woman lost $20,000 after a scammer accessed her bank account in June, according to a Rochester Police Department press release.
The release said the woman needed help accessing her Facebook account, so she called a help-desk number that appeared on Google. The number showed up as a Kentucky area code.
The woman reported that a male with a foreign accent instructed her to provide him with remote access to her device in order for him to check her apps for anything suspicious.
The male went to her bank account and took $20,000. According to the release, the woman is working with her bank to recover the funds.
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
