YouTube has released an updated eraser tool that takes advantage of AI-powered algorithm to remove copyrighted songs without impacting audio quality. Here’s the latest.

“Good news creators—our updated Erase Song tool helps you easily remove copyright-claimed music from your video (while leaving the rest of your audio intact),” announced YouTube CEO Neal Mohan on July 4. A sneak peek video of the feature shows that YouTube has been working on the updated eraser tool for a while now.

The AI-powered algorithm can identify copyrighted music to remove without impacting the audio quality. YouTube’s support page notes that the feature is currently an experiment and in some cases, may fail to remove the copyrighted material. “This edit might not work if the song is hard to remove. If the tool doesn’t successfully remove the copyright claim on a video, you can try other editing options, such as muting all sound in the claimed segments or trimming out claimed segments,” YouTube suggests.

If copyrighted sound is muted or trimmed, then YouTube will remove the content ID claim, allowing the video to stay up. The tool is important for live content creators, who may be filming in public locations playing copyrighted music. It’s also an example in which AI is helping to enforce copyright, by making it easier for creators to remove offending content from their videos.

YouTube’s updated song eraser tool is just one such example—preserving the original copyright while allowing creators more control over their public recordings. Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records are in talks with YouTube about licensing their songs for AI training—potentially to supplement a tool like song eraser by helping it become more accurate at identifying copyrighted material.
