Masahiro Sakurai wraps final YouTube video to presumably focus on game development again – "youtube" – Google News

As far as accomplishments go, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be the magnum opus for just about any creator out there, but Masahiro Sakurai is not done making games yet.

While he has been putting a lot of his time into the Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games channel, it appears the legendary developer will be hanging up his YouTube hat.

Sakurai recently shared that filming has wrapped for what is planned to be his final video on the channel.

He goes on to say, however, that it will probably be “a while before it is released” and to please continue enjoying regular episodes until then.

It’s not stated how many more videos they have in the tank or what the subject of the final video is going to be, but don’t expect him to be making any big announcements as to what his next project is going to be in all likelihood.

This doesn’t really come as much of a surprise considering Sakurai previously revealed he planned on wrapping up his YouTube channel at some point in 2024 at the start of the year, and it looks like that time is quickly approaching.

Sakurai hasn’t made it publicly known what exactly he plans to do next except that he’s still “creating games for the time being” at the end of 2023 after saying in 2022 that he was “semi-retired.”

As far as we know, the Smash and Kirby creator hasn’t worked on anything new since Smash Ultimate released in 2018 though this year marked the end of his time with the massive endeavor after a couple final updates.

Considering he’s been behind the driver’s wheel for the platform fighter for basically over a decade straight at this point since Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, it’d totally be understandable if he want to take on something completely different like he used to with Kid Icarus: Uprising and Meteos.

Since he’s led his own company, Sora Ltd., since 2005, Sakurai could presumably go and do whatever he wants next in the realm of games even though fans are of course going to be clamoring for more Smash.

Bandai Namco, who co-developed the last two Smash entries, did have some interesting job openings last year for seemingly Nintendo-related projects, so perhaps there is something already underway.

With the amount of content the game already has, many fans would probably be happy with a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch successor before presumably a much longer wait for a brand new entry in the series.

Just add a handful of new characters and bring in rollback netcode, and people would be playing that game forever.

Sakurai did most recently release a new video about attack hitboxes and collision focused largely around Smash, which you can check out below.
