The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Unclaimed Funds confirmed that the state of Ohio has about $4 billion of unclaimed funds.
Columbus/Franklin County and several central Ohio counties have more than $400 million in money waiting to be claimed.
Some of that money could be yours. Here’s how to claim it and how you might have “lost” it.
How do I check if I have unclaimed funds?
You can find your funds on The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Unclaimed Funds website.
You search by first and last name or business name for unclaimed funds in Ohio or any other state.
What are unclaimed funds?
After bank accounts become inactive, businesses and banks report unclaimed funds, or money left behind in these accounts, to the Division of Unclaimed Funds. This happens every three to five years.
What kind of accounts does this money come from?
According to the Ohio Department of Commerce, these unclaimed funds come from inactive checking and savings accounts, stocks and bonds, forgotten utility deposits, unknown insurance claims, and last paychecks.
Top 10 central Ohio counties with the most in unclaimed funds
As it houses the state’s most populous city, Columbus, it’s not surprising to see Franklin County rank No. 2 in the state for the amount of unclaimed funds.
Hamilton County is No. 3 with $267 million in unclaimed money, per the Cincinnati Enquirer, while Cuyahoga County tops the state with close to half a billion dollars ($477 million) unaccounted for, according to WBNS.
