Samsung Removes Its Messaging App, Makes Google Defau

In a surprising move, Samsung removed its built-in messaging app from its pre-installed list and added Google Messaging instead.

Samsung has been making tectonic shifts in its business, both internally and at the consumer end. In a recent move, the tech giant discontinued the legacy Samsung Messages app from all newer mobile devices and replaced it with Google Messages as the default messaging app. But why?

Firstly, the company has not removed Samsung Messages as a service offering. It has simply chosen to favor Google Messages by reinstalling it in all Galaxy models. The move is taking effect immediately in the US, with more countries to follow up based on their local compliance rules. The Samsung Messages app is still available to download globally from the Play Store. However, it is not clear if the organization is slowly letting the Samsung Messages app die down.

According to the company, Google Messages supports the RCS format much better than its indigenous messaging app. Ever since text messages evolved to RCS format, the Samsung Messages app has struggled to keep up with the new media formats due to varied local carrier rules and integration challenges. Google has a much larger network of local network partners and established integration technology, allowing for a better RCS experience.

Samsung began this transition silently back in 2021 when it made Google Messages the default app in multiple regions. As it moves more directly towards pushing the Google Messages app, it is also enabling RCS format by default in the new Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 models. These models will no longer have Samsung Messages preinstalled.

“Starting with Flip6, Fold6, and newer models, the Samsung Messages app will no longer be preloaded. Instead, Google Messages will provide a new and enhanced experience to express your emotions, making communication safe and fun,” stated the company’s official notice on the members-only forum. Samsung also clarified that, though the Samsung Messages app will be available globally, many features will be excluded in the upcoming versions. This announcement has already dropped the app from the list of best messaging apps worldwide.
