How to keep yours active

The clock is ticking before Google starts deleting inactive Gmail accounts.

Starting Dec. 1, Google will begin enforcing its updated inactive account policy, according to Forbes.

The policy, first enacted in May, will cover accounts that have been inactive for two years or more, including a Google Suite products like Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar and Google Photos.

The policy will only apply to personal Google accounts and not Google accounts set up through schools or businesses.

According to a blog post from Ruth Kricheli, VP of Google’s product management, the mass account deletion is part of a security measure to protect Google’s accounts.

Here’s what you should do to keep your account active if yours is eligible to be deleted.

How to keep your Google account active

The easiest way to keep your Google account active is to sign in at least once every two years. You can also do the following while you’re signed in:

  • Read or send an email
  • Use Google Drive
  • Watch a YouTube video
  • Download an app on the Google Play Store
  • Use Google Search
  • Sign In with Google to a third-party app or service

Once you’ve signed into your Google account and completed one of those actions, Google will consider your account active and it will not be deleted.

If you have a current subscription set up through your Google account, it will not be deleted. But take note: you must sign into Google Photos at least once every two years to make sure those photos are not deleted.
