Gmail on Android and iOS gets AI-powered Gemini side panel

Google Workspace dropped a major update that allows even the most non-productive white-collar worker or C-suite executive who’s never in the office to get help with their work.

In a blog post, Google said that its emailing service, Gmail, gets its Gemini AI assistant as a side panel on iOS and Android. This is a follow-up to adding Gemini to the web version of Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Drive.

Features are similar to the web version of Gmail’s Gemini, which include summarising email threads for key highlights, Contextual Smart Reply, and Gmail Q&A. The latter two are more full-featured than patronising “I’m working on it” responses and a personalised Q&A assistant to help you find stuff in your inbox, but they are paid tools that will only come later to Android and iOS versions of Gmail.

According to Google, the feature’s rollout to both apps will start now (24 June 2024) and continue for the following 15 days.
