Search leader Google is adding Gemini in the side panel of Gmail and more Google apps. Powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini in the side panel will also be available on the web. It can summarise email threads, suggest responses and draft emails. Users can ask the model for specific information from a mail conversation in the inbox or Google Drive.

Gemini will be available in the Gmail app on Android and iOS for select paying users. It can help users analyse email threads and view a summary of the top highlights, similar to the web version. This can ease scanning information on a smaller screen faster. Google said more features such as e Contextual Smart Reply and Gmail Q and A will be available on mobile platforms soon.

“While Gemini in Gmail will provide proactive prompts to help you get started, you can also ask freeform questions,” Google said. Gemini can also connect to other Workspace apps such as Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides to help users. Users must enable the smart features and personalisation to use the side panel in Workspace apps. On the web, users can access Gemini from the Gmail side panel by clicking “Ask Gemini [star button]” at the top right.

On smartphones, you can access the AI model using the “summarise this email” chip in an email thread having more than two responses. The company also announced the general availability of Gemini 1.5 Pro-powered Gemini in the side panel of Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive (via the spark button – ‘Ask Gemini’). Apart from text generation and answering questions about content, it can generate images in Slides.

“Gemini 1.5 Pro model with a longer context window and more advanced reasoning, allowing you to harness the power of Gemini directly from your most used Google Workspace apps,” Google said. The features have started rolling out and will be available to Google Workspace customers having Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on and Google One AI Premium.
