Google is rolling Gemini-powered features to Gmail on web, Android and iPhones

Google has announced the general availability of Gemini in the Gmail side panel. This means that users can access the side panel that leverages Google’s AI capable models, including the Gemini 1.5 Pro with a longer context window and more advanced reasoning, in Gmail.

According to a blog post by Google, users can use Gemini in Gmail on web to:

  • Summarise an email thread
  • Suggest responses to an email thread
  • Get help drafting an email
  • Ask questions and find specific information from emails within your inbox or from your Google Drive files

Gemini in Gmail will provide prompts to help users get started with their conversation, and users can also ask questions.

“Starting today, you can also use Gemini in the Gmail mobile app on Android and iOS to analyse email threads and see a summarised view with the key highlights, just as you can with the side panel on the web,” the company said.

With the AI model in place, Gmail can help users quickly go-through the gist of the long email threads, saving valuable time. Features like Contextual Smart Reply and Gmail Q&A can also help users make mobile email management easy.

How and why to use Gemini in Gmail
Gemini in Gmail not only helps users to view, understand and respond to email content but it also connects to other Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive.

For example, if you are planning a trip with your work colleagues and making a list of participants in Google Docs shared over an email. Users can ask Gemini to look up the names from the Google Doc that contains the details of the trip by asking a question in natural language to insert information in the reply.

Availability of Gemini in Gmail
To access Gemini in the side panel of Workspace apps, users need to have smart features and personalisation turned on. Admins can turn on the default personalisation setting for their users.

On the web version, users can access Gemini in the Gmail side panel by clicking on “Ask Gemini” (star button) in the top right corner of Gmail.

On Android and iPhones, users can access Gemini by tapping on the “summarise this email” chip in an email thread.

Full rollout (1-3 days for feature visibility) for Rapid Release domains is starting on June 24 while for Scheduled Release domains, gradual rollout (up to 15 days for feature visibility) starts on July 8.

Gemini in Gmail is available for Google Workspace customers with:

  • Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on
  • Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on
  • Google One AI Premium
