OpenAI Delays New Voice Features. It Risks Losing a Race with Google.

OpenAI has delayed the planned launch of a new advanced “voice mode” for its ChatGPT artificial-intelligence model. The setback means it risks losing out to Google in the race to develop a fluent conversational AI.

OpenAI said it had to push back the rollout of the feature to a small group of subscribers in late June, as the company had to make improvements to areas, including the ability to refuse to generate certain content. The company said it needs “one more month” to reach the bar for launch to the limited group before a wider release later this year.

“We are planning for all Plus users to have access in the fall. Exact timelines depend on meeting our high safety and reliability bar. We are also working on rolling out the new video and screen-sharing capabilities we demoed separately,” OpenAI said in a post on social-media platform X late on Tuesday.

Google said in May that it would roll out a similar conversational ability called Live for the company’s Gemini AI model “in the coming months,” promising more intuitive speech abilities.

Of course the ability to speak with a chatbot or virtual assistant is only one small area of AI. However, there are concerns that

“The costs of training and inferencing multi-trillion parameter models are growing far more quickly than performance is improving which is unsustainable,” wrote independent analyst Richard Windsor, who publishes Radio Free Mobile, in a recent blog post.

OpenAI has previewed other features that it has yet to bring to general release, including text-to-video generator Sora. OpenAI also recently had to pause the use of a voice for ChatGPT which actress Scarlett Johansson said was “eerily” similar to hers. The company denied the voice was intended to resemble the actress, but OpenAI would pause its use “[o]ut of respect for Ms. Johansson.”

AI is becoming big business—OpenAI’s annualized revenue rate has doubled to $3.4 billion, according to a recent report from technology-focused news site The Information—and that could be changing the company’s approach.

AI chief Demis Hassabis attributed OpenAI’s success in rolling out ChatGPT ahead of similar products from Google to its “Silicon Valley growth mentality,” and willingness to put out a system with flaws to the general public.

Now that success has brought it into the public eye, OpenAI faces a tougher challenge to balance innovation and risk.
