‘Wordle’ #1,137 Clues And Answer For Tuesday, July 30

Newsweek is back once again to help you solve the daily Wordle puzzle.

New York-based engineer Josh Wardle perfected the linguistic brainteaser during the COVID-19 lockdowns. It was then released to the public in October 2021 and he eventually sold the game to The New York Times in early 2022.

Wardle explained why he chose to use five-letter words for Wordle, as opposed to other word lengths, in an interview with Newsweek in January 2022.

“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” he added. “That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.

“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time, people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”

In May, The New York Times announced it was expanding on the original Wordle game to offer subscribers access to more than 1,000 past puzzles from the official Wordle archive on the web and in the NYT Games app.

“We are thrilled to unlock the official Wordle archive for our subscribers. This expansion is not just about playing past puzzles; it’s about deepening the connection our community has with Wordle and with each other,” Jonathan Knight, head of games at The New York Times, said at the time.

“We believe this will make the daily puzzle even more engaging and provide even more moments of surprise and delight for our subscribers to share with friends and family.”

To solve the daily game, players must deduce a secret five-letter word within six attempts. A color-coded tile system provides feedback to help players gauge their progress.

A green tile indicates the correct letter in the correct position, while a yellow tile signifies the letter is in the word but in the wrong place. A gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all.
