Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

My opening guess, SHADE, was not great but not terrible, either. With one green E and (I’d later learn) 147 possible solutions remaining, I thought at first I’d try all new letters. But as I pondered words for my second guess, I came upon ROUTE, which included two more vowels and two pretty common letters. This seemed like a good choice and it was: With three green boxes and one yellow, all I could come up with for my third guess was FORTE. Turns out, I was lucky. Wordle Bot later informed me that TORTE was also an option. Had I chosen to go into law instead of writing, I probably would have guessed that instead!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying the Bot. Any day in the green is a good day. Huzzah!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “forte” has its origins in the Latin word “fortis,” which means “strong” or “brave.” The term entered English through French, where “fort” also means “strong.” In English, “forte” has come to refer to a person’s strong point or skill.

In a different context, particularly in music, “forte” is used to indicate a passage that should be played loudly, deriving from the Italian word for “strong” or “loud.” This usage also traces back to the Latin “fortis.”
