5 interesting facts about Rhode Island’s new Amazon distribution center

Amazon’s new Rhode Island facility is finally close to opening in Johnston after much anticipation.

The Providence Journal recently went on a tour of the new building, which should open before the holiday rush this fall. We found dozens of robots, miles of conveyor belts and 3.8 million square feet of space that, when fully staffed, will have more employees than the year round population of Block Island.

Here are five things to know about the new Amazon distribution center:

1. When will it be open and operational?

There’s not an exact date yet that has been shared as to when Rhode Island’s Amazon distribution center will open, but it will be running in time for the holiday rush this year. Once it’s up and running, people will be working in it day and night.

2. Is RI’s Amazon facility hiring? How much can people make working there?

Hiring for management positions at the Johnston Amazon facility has already started, but the vast majority of the projected 1,500 people who will work there will be hired 30 to 60 days before the distribution center opens, to allow time for training.

Most of the positions will be full time. The minimum wage for Amazon workers is $17 an hour, while the average is $20.50 an hour. That equates to about $35,360 to $42,640. Benefits include full health coverage, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and a retirement account match.

3. What will the Rhode Island Amazon distribution center do?

The new Johnston warehouse will serve the entire Northeast and is the first stop for incoming goods.

The facility will handle small goods, or things that could be carried onto a plane. Products will be picked and sorted, and then be sent off either to shippers like USPS or UPS, or to another Amazon facility, like its “last mile” facility in Providence.

4. What’s the new building near the distribution center?

Encompass Health, a publicly traded company based in Alabama, is building a rehabilitation hospital at 2109 Hartford Ave, just down from the Amazon facility. According to the Encompass Health website, the slated opening date is this summer.

5. What’s with the robots?

Amazon’s new Johnston distribution center relies heavily on dozens of Roomba-like robots that move carts of products to and from employee stations. Most of the open space on each floor is fenced off from people and the robots are penned inside to zoom around without putting employees in danger.

When a technician does have to go into the pen where robots quickly push upright carts filled with products, they will wear a special vest that should give them a buffer zone from being hit.

The robots, called Hercules, are one of several robot models used by Amazon in their distribution facilities across the country to do the heavy lifting. And they do mean heavy – according to this article, Hercules can lift 1,250 pounds and carry that weight across millions of square feet in the distribution centers.
