ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1117 Hints, Clues And Answer For Wednesday, July 10th

Thor’s Day has returned with lightning and thunder—or, well, with blue skies and the occasional cloud. The weather will have to catch up with this day’s namesake. I hear we’re getting some thunderstorms this weekend. I’ll say a few prayers to Thor just to be sure.

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and I gave you fine folk what I consider a relatively tricky one, though mostly because it’s a bit of a puzzle to untangle the phrasing. This was the riddle:

An old man goes to visit another man in prison. The prison guard stops him and says, “I’m sorry sir. Only relatives are allowed to visit. Are you related to the prisoner?” The old man says, “Brothers and sisters I have none. That man’s father is my father’s son.”

Who is the old man?

The answer is: The father of the prisoner. That man’s (the prisoner’s) father is my father’s son. Weird sounding, but it clearly makes him the father of the prisoner. Isn’t language fun?

Speaking of which, let’s solve this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Small part, big name.

The Clue: This Wordle has two vowels in a row.

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

I opened with a word about as close to the Wordle Bot’s favorite (CRANE) as possible and sure enough, CRATE did just fine. 12 words remained and tried, unsuccessfully, to rearrange those vowels. I got very unlucky, with both still in yellow. I didn’t know I had 8 words left at this point, but I realize now just how crazy lucky my third guess was. CAMEO for the win! Huzzah!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 points for tying that rotten Wordle Bot. What a jerk! Still, 1 point is muy bien! Huzzah!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “cameo” has an interesting etymology that traces back to several languages and cultures.

Italian and Latin Origins:

  • The modern English word “cameo” is derived from the Italian word “cammeo.”
  • This, in turn, comes from the Medieval Latin “cammaeus.”

Arabic Influence:

  • The Medieval Latin “cammaeus” likely originated from the Arabic word “qamaʾil,” which means “flower bud” or “amulet.”

Ancient Greek Roots:

  • Some etymologists also suggest a connection to the Greek word “kamai,” meaning “in the ground,” possibly referring to the method of carving into the surface of stones.

The word “cameo” has been used in English since the 15th century, initially referring to a carved gemstone with a raised relief image. Over time, its meaning expanded to include brief appearances by famous actors in films, which mirrors the idea of a small, distinctive, and noticeable feature in a larger work.
