ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1123 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, July 16th

I’m on the road still as I type up this Wordle guide—or, rather, at a family resort with my teenage children. It’s been quite lovely as we haven’t had a family vacation in quite some time. It sounds weird, still, to say “teenage children” but they’re 17 and 14. Growing up. Wendy is about to leave the nursery. Time to fly to Never Never Land!

I still feel young—43 isn’t that old!—but I was a young parent, and my daughter flies the coop in less than a year. My son has his high school stint ahead of him still. Long before I turn 50, my children will be out in the wide, wide world and I’ll be all on my lonesome (not counting the pack of mutts lazing about). How strange and different the world will be then. Time to get in these family trips before it’s too late! “They grow up so fast,” is trite but true, as trite things often are.

It’s also Wordle Wednesday, which means you get an extra riddle, brain teaser or logic puzzle on top of today’s Wordle. We must keep our wits about us! There is no greater line of self-defense than a sharp mind. Here’s today’s bonus puzzle:

Five apes were eating oranges. The Orangutan finished eating before the Gorilla, but behind the Chimp. The Bonobo finished before the Gibbon, but behind the Gorilla. What was the finishing order?

If you solve this, shoot me a message on Twitter and Facebook. I’ll post the answer in the Thor’s Day Wordle guide tomorrow here on this blog.

Now let’s do this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

What a very lucky guessing game tI had today! I guessed QUIET because we’re off to see the new A Quiet Place film and I figured I’d guess that and then maybe PLACE as a follow-up, but it ended up being a remarkably lucky first guess. I had three green boxes and two yellow boxes and obviously just one word remaining: QUITE for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 2 points for guessing in two and 1 point for beating the Wordle Bot who took four tries today. Huzzah!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “quite” originates from Middle English “quiten” or “quit”, meaning to repay or release. This comes from Old French “quiter”, which traces back to Latin “quietus”, meaning free or at rest. Over time, “quite” evolved to mean completely or entirely.
