Not only is this good news for all you party people ready to paint the town red, it’s also 2XP Friday for Competitive Wordlers. Double Huzzah!

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

I think my opening guess today—SPOIL—was my worst in months. 611 words remained to choose from after that one. Yikes. TRADE did a decent job slashing that humongous number down. With just 30 words remaining, I tried juggling the yellow boxes I had and guessed—quite luckily—RECUR. That got me an ‘R’ in both the starting and ending boxes, much to my surprise. One word remained: REFER for the win.

I get 0 points for guessing in four, but I actually beat the Wordle Bot today (it guessed in five, silly Bot) so I get a point for that. 1 point for me! Hooray!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

• Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
• If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
• Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
• You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “refer” comes from the Latin verb “referre,” which means “to bring back, report, or relate.” The Latin word is a combination of “re-” meaning “back” and “ferre” meaning “to carry or bear.” Over time, “referre” evolved through Old French as “referer” and entered Middle English in the form of “referren” or “referren,” ultimately becoming “refer” in modern English. The word has retained its core meaning of directing someone to a source of information or sending something to another place or person.
