Today’s ‘Wordle’ #1,128 Answer, Clues and Hints for Sunday, July 21 Game

More than two years have passed since Wordle first became an online sensation, yet its daily brainteasers continue to challenge and engage word puzzle enthusiasts.

Created by Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle in January 2021, the game took the world by storm, growing from 91 players in November 2021 to over 2 million in January 2022.

The New York Times later took notice of Wordle’s huge success, purchasing the game for a seven-figure sum in January 2022.

To solve the daily Wordle puzzle, players must deduce a secret five-letter word within six attempts. A color-coded tile system provides feedback to help players gauge their progress.

A green tile indicates the correct letter in the correct position, while a yellow tile signifies the letter is in the word but in the wrong place. A gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all.

Wardle explained why he chose to use five-letter words for Wordle as opposed to other word lengths in an interview with Newsweek in January 2022.

“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” he said. “That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.

“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”

Emmy award-winning actor Keegan-Michael Key agreed that the game gives players a sense of accomplishment, telling the NYT in 2023: “There’s a fun sense of accomplishment that comes with starting the day solving a New York Times game.”

He continued: “It’s also a great reason to have a quick check-in with a few of my friends (and get in a little friendly competition). I’ve always been a fan of words and language and any game that can test my acumen.”
